At our “laboratorio” which is also a school, the presence of children
is tollerated during June and July.
My son is quite used to spending the whole day there, slipping in and out of the different rooms,
each dedicated to a “mestiere”, a technique, like mosaic art,
ornamental decoration or book binding.
Today he decided to begin the day by sweeping the floor of the
restoration workshop, looking for old screws or odd nails.
After finishing some pages of his summer workbook,
he helped me prepare sushi, since I had decided to do sushi
catering for my colleagues today. The sushi I make are of course
not the real ones: I used smoke salmon and canned mackarel which
wasn’t that bad.
Betta, the commode that I am restoring now, is changing by the day!
I designed a keyhole that goes quite well with the Beidermeyer style frame
she has on her fa?ade. Actually the original keyholes were shaped like
teardrops, but quite consumed.
The curved shield-shaped keyhole seems to enhance the design of the frame.
Usually, when you’re up to something, colleagues pass by frequently
and leave some interesting comments,
which sometimes make you decide to change the course of your
restoration. (That I think is the best part about working in a
workshop with many artisans, though it isn’t easy to
co-exist in a limited space with a limited number of tools.)
My colleagues all seemed quite convinced this time and they
all agreed that this change has been good for Betta!
My son finished the day by making some more of his
wooden toys, made with scraps of wood coming from
the vicinities of the electric saw.
He didn’t get 'ottimo' in Art this year but I think he’s quite good at
designing eloquent objects!
６月に入ると、工房には子供たちの姿がよく見かけられる。
もちろん、正式に許可があるわけではないのだが、
夏休みに入ると、子連れでコースを受けに来る人が何人かいる。
息子は工房で時間を過ごすのに慣れている。
学校もかねている工房の部屋は、技法ごとに分かれている。
モザイク、装飾、製本、絵画修復など
昔から伝わるさまざまな技法に関するあらゆる道具のおいてある部屋を
行き来するのはけっこう楽しいことだと思う。
息子は今日は家具修復の工房の床掃除から始めた。
ほうきで掃いていると、不思議な形をした
古い釘やらねじが見つかるのである。
そのあと、お寿司を作るのを手伝ってもらった。
もちろんお刺身を使わす、スモークサーモンや
マカレルの缶詰を使ったものだ。
この頃日本食は人気があるので、私の作る本物でない寿司も
みんな喜んで食べてくれる。
箪笥の「BETTA」さんはますます美しくなってきた。
涙型のキーホールはかなり破損していたので
代わりに、ビーデルマイヤー風のフレームに想を得た
シールド型のキーホールをデザインしてやり（メープルを使用）、
４つの引き出しにつけてやった。
大勢の職人の出入りするこの工房ではちょっと変わった作業をしていると
必ず同僚の目にとまり、みんな色々なコメントを残していく。
おかげで時には考えていたのと全然違った方向をとる場合がある。
今回は結構みな、この方向に賛成してくれた。
息子は電気のこぎり周辺で見つかる、色々な形をした
木の破片を使って今日もオブジェを制作。
学校の通信簿では美術が５段階で４なのだが、
デザイン的に見れば、それなりに魅力的な形のものを作る
力があるんじゃないかと思う。
