The Tiber, called "the River" once was the
center of life in the city of Rome.
Once the embankments were constructed in order
to save the city from the floods,
the River disappeared from everyday life.
Now the city is trying to readopt the Tiber
and to bring life back to its waters.
One interesting project is the River Poetry Project:
26 panels with poems or extracts from diaries of
famous writers have been placed on the walls along the Tiber
underneath Castel Sant'Angelo.
With two other moms and a dad from my son's class
we participated in the meeting commemorating this project
that took place at the Bookshop Cafe' Bibli in Trastevere.
(It was the first time I rode a scooter along the Tiber!!
It was scary but so thrilling!

Some poets recited their verses dedicated to the River.
After the meeting we all went down to the river banks
to read the panels.
In one of the photos above you can see a Butoh performance
taking place in front of a panel dedicated to Dante,
with the dome of Saint Peter in the background.
テヴェレ川。
昔は今の堤防がなかったので川は街の一部だった。
トラステヴェレのルンガーラ通りなどはまさに川沿いの道だった。
１９世紀末に堤防ができて
街は洪水で悩まされることは少なくなったのだが
川が街を二分することになり、川は生活から消えてしまう。
現在は堤防を降りた所の川沿いにはサイクリングロードができたり
夏にはテイヴェリーナ島を中心に屋台が並んだりしてにぎわうのだが
少し前までは治安の悪い暗闇の場所であった。
ティベリーナ島の病院で息子を出産したとき、
昼間はテヴェレ両側の道を通る車の音がうるさかったのだが
夜になり、交通量がだんだん減って行くにつれ、
川の流れの音が増し、本当に川の真ん中に自分はいるのだなあと
実感したのを思い出す。
テヴェレを謳った詩はテヴェレのことを「川」il Fiume と呼ぶ。
１９世紀の詩の中で「川」は死をもたらす存在だった。
洪水、自殺、渡し船の船頭の水死・・・
「川」をテーマとした詩や作品の抜粋を集めた２６のパネルを
現在、サンタンジェロ城近くの川沿いで見ることができる。
残念ながら、英語が言語のものはのぞき、
イタリア語が中心なのであるが、
詩を読みつつ、川を散歩できるので楽しい。
先週の金曜、トラステヴェレの「ビブリ」という
カフェ兼ブックショップでパネル・プロジェクトのお披露目があり、
ローマの詩人たちが大勢集まり、テヴェレをテーマとした詩を
朗読してくれた。
（ところで、ローマでケーキを食べるのであれば
絶対ビブリがお勧めである！！！！

お披露目のあと、みなでサンタンジェロ城下の川沿いに集まり、
舞踏、歌謡などのパフォーマンスが展開された。
お披露目にはクラスの父兄３人といっしょに行ったのだが
みんなで待ち合わせをしてスクーターでトラステヴェレに移動。
モレッティの映画を見て以来、ローマをスクーターで走るのは
ちょっとした憧れであった。
しかしローマに引っ越してから
ほとんど毎朝のようにスクーターの事故を目にしてからは
その憧れもどっかにすっとんでしまっていたのだが
テヴェレ川の堤防に沿ったLungotevereを走るのは
実に壮快であった。
