２００８年 ７月 夾竹桃 Nerium oleander

The oleanders are bursting in color, ranging from white to dark pink.
There are many avenues that are lined on both sides with oleander
here in Rome,
they are also planted along the highways.
Rome as I first saw it coming in from the airport...
beautiful oleanders waving in the wind created by the passing bus
with run-down condos nestled on the hills in the background...
The whole plant is poisonous.
(I would like to see the film White Oleander!)
During the invasion a whole troupe of Napoleon's soldiers died because
they used oleander as spits for their grilled meat.
The oleanders here in the photos are from Via Bonghi
near our workshop.

I am re-reading Ikuma Arishima's short stories based on his
experiences in Rome.
They are beautiful.
As you walk the allies up on the Pincio
you can still imagine the Rome he embraced.

初めて見たローマは夾竹桃の満開のローマであった。
ダヴィンチ空港からバスで市内に入るときの環状線は
真ん中に色とりどりの夾竹桃が植えられており、
背後の丘にはぼろぼろのアパートがたくさん並んでいた。
（現在はけっこうきれになっている）
写真の夾竹桃は工房の近くの並木道。
木全体が本当は毒性があり、
イタリアに進軍したナポレオンの兵隊が
夾竹桃の枝を肉の串刺しの串に使ったため、死亡したらしい。

有島生馬のローマ滞在期の経験がベースになっている短編を
再読している。
今でもピンチョの丘の路地を歩いていると
彼が体ごと感じ取ったローマを見出すことができる。
